Awards
In 2005, Whistler received the covetted Livable Communities Award. Whistler was identified as having a groundbreaking vision and sustainability plan, "Whistler 2020 - Moving Toward a Sustainable Future".
The plan was seen as an international, best practice planning model for the world. Whistler also received a silver medal and third place overall in the 0 to 20,000 population category for liveable communities.
Whistler was one of only two communities in the entire competition to receive awards in multiple categories.
The international awards, endorsed by the United Nation's Environmental Program, are designed to encourage best practice, innovation and leadership in providing a vibrant, environmentally sustainable community that improves the quality of life for its citizens and the global community. The awards cover five population categories, and Whistler was among 10 finalists in its category.
